A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to experience IV Therapy at the Serona Centre for Integrative Medicine and Yoga, in Uptown Waterloo.

It was actually perfect timing, on that cold Friday morning, because I actually woke up with a tickle in the throat. You know that precursor sign that you may be coming down with a cold? I was ready to get pumped full of vitamins and nip that baby in the butt before it blew up into a runny nose and a dreaded cough! But would I really feel any different?

For those that know me, you know that I am a HUGE proponent of healthy eating and natural supplements for healing. I firmly believe that Mother Nature has put enough splendor on this planet to save us all.... but I wondered what would my take be on this infusion after I had received it?

I arrived at the clinic, which is in an old, character home that is aesthetically appealing in crisp hues of white – both inside and out.  I was greeted by their lovely front desk staff, Jessika and their clinic director, Kelsey with lovely smiles and welcoming grace.

Into the doctor’s office I went to get all the details on what they were about to introduce into my body. Now ladies, little secret I’m about to share; Dr. Benjamin, ND, is quite a handsome fellow, so perhaps do some reading beforehand on the Myer’s cocktail. You may not retain all the info he provides. This was a welcome distraction though, as he administered the IV. (I am not a huge fan of receiving needles).

For the next 45 minutes I sat comfortably next to the giant window, where the morning light streamed in, with my arm outstretched on a bolster, while some opaque liquid dripped in to my arm. The willowy sounds of Bon Iver comforted my busy mind. I felt relaxed and ready to receive the wellness. Want to know what I was being injected with?

Here are the specifics:

“IV (Intravenous) Therapy involves delivering high doses of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, amino acids and plant based medicines directly into the blood. It is by far, the fastest and most efficient method of treating nutritional shortcomings, re-establishing ideal physiological nutrient status, and achieving therapeutic levels of nutrients to treat a wide range of medical conditions. “ – taken from the information pamphlet given by the Serona Center.

Why would anyone want this? Well, I would argue that the majority of our diet is nutritionally deficient, unless one is paying utmost attention and being constantly diligent in regards to what they are consuming. Our highly processed foods contain preservatives and stabilizers, (and pesticides if we are not buying organic), that not only do us no favors, but actually tax our body by providing us with unnecessary toxins that our bodies must then use precious energy to rid; energy that instead could be used for healing.

What is this Myer’s Cocktail actually giving us? (That’s the name for this IV potion). It’s a blend of vitamin C, vitamin B5, B6, B12, B-complex, calcium and magnesium. So not only is it good stuff but the benefit of transmission is also valuable. “When the nutrients are given intravenously they bypass the liver and digestive system, dramatically increasing the therapeutic value of the medication. The increase in nutrient levels in the blood stream helps drive nutrients into the cells and target tissues where they can be used to improve recovery, decrease fatigue and address the root cause of illness”.  – taken from the information pamphlet given by the Serona Center.

The clinic advises that this treatment would benefit those suffering from cancer, parkinson’s, migraines, headaches, fibromyalgia, depression, chronic pain, PMS, allergies, viral illnesses and colds…. and more. I would say, actually, that we could all benefit from a bit more nutrition in our system!

Aside from the IV Therapy, the clinic also offers the following services:

Naturopathic Medicine

Holistic Nutrition

Therapeutic Yoga

Massage Therapy and Thai Yoga Massage

Energy Medicine

Biopuncture

Mesotherapy

Awesomeness right? Want to know what else is awesome? I never caught that cold I felt coming on ;)
